Everton are set to lose young talent Jake Doughty to Aston Villa in what can be considered a blow to the Toffees.

The 16-year-old winger is a regular for England at age-grade level.

He scored seven goals for Everton Under-18s last season and is well thought of at Finch Farm.

However, an exit for Doughty is now nearing as fellow Premier League side Villa look to pounce.

Everton fans love nothing more than seeing an academy prospect progress through the ranks, but that will not be the case for Doughty.

And it spells longer-terms issues for the Toffees that they could do without.

How close is Jake Doughty to joining Aston Villa?

Everton fans will be more concerned about transfers for the senior side - and in particular a new right-back.

Daniel Munoz continues to be linked with Everton, as do a number of other potential options.

However, the next deal that looks likely to be confirmed will be some outgoing activity.

As per a report from The Athletic, Villa are close to an agreement for Doughty.

The transfer is said to be in the final steps, with just minor details to be ironed out.

Villa have been looking for a new youngster in that position after losing Heaven Kilwa.

The report states Doughty is "well-regarded' at Everton, but the Merseyside outfit have not done enough to convince him to stay.

Why Doughty exit is bad news for Everton

Not many will be aware of Doughty, given he is not yet close to challenging for a first-team place at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

However, losing such a highly fought of talent to a fellow Premier League side is a worrying development.

Doughty clearly feels he has a better route to first-team football at Villa Park than he does at Everton.

The very nature of football means players will come and go, but this is a worrying development for Everton.

Supporters will hope Doughty is making the wrong choice, but ultimately only time will tell on that front.

The teenager has seemingly made his choice, though, and that must be respected.
