Why Mauro Icardi decision is now just 24 hours away amid Everton transfer talk

Everton could get some clarity on whether Mauro Icardi is still an attainable target in the next 24 hours.

The Toffees were left desperately short up top following the recent close of the summer transfer window.

Beto's exit on deadline day leaves just Thierno Barry to lead the line until January.

That is unless Everton swallow their pride, so to speak, and delve into the free agent market for scraps.

Icardi, who has 250 career goals, remains on the market after leaving Galatasaray in the summer.

Everton reportedly lined up a move for Icardi last week, but they are not alone with their interest.

What talks are planned with Mauro Icardi?

The latest reports to come out of Argentina last week suggested Everton were pondering an approach to Icardi's camp.

There has been radio silence since, but it would not be surprising if the Toffees did at least reach out to weigh up the situation.

However, Sky Sport Italia reporter Manuele Baiocchini, as per Gianluca Di Marzio, reported on Monday that a move to Lazio could be close.

Icardi, who was hailed a "killer" finisher by former Inter coach Benoit Cauet in 2019, is scheduled to hold talks with Lazio boss Gennaro Gattuso on Monday and Tuesday.

You would therefore imagine the 33-year-old would give a definitive yes or no to the Italian side in the next 24 hours or so.

Everton will then know whether Icardi is still on the free market or if he has been snapped up.

Icardi's stance shifts on Lazio transfer

It is fair to say Icardi's peak years are behind him after three years in Turkey.

However, his record in European football has to be respected. Plus, anything is better than nothing, as they say.

Would it really be a bad call for Everton to bring him in until the end of the season as a wildcard option?

However, it must be said that a move to Lazio does look as though it is more likely than not to happen.

The same report states how Icardi's stance has shifted and he is now more open to joining Lazio if the terms are right.

One way or another, we will soon find out.
