Wilfried Gnonto showed why Everton wanted to sign him after his goal for Leeds United against Portsmouth.

The Whites began their Championship campaign in frustrating circumstances, drawing 3-3 with newly promoted Portsmouth at Elland Road.

Despite this, Irish Mail journalist David Kent (11 August, page 62) has picked out Gnonto for his performance after transfer links to the Toffees.

He said: "Leeds were stunned but Gnonto shared the kind of quality which prompted Everton to bid £23million for his services earlier this summer, cutting inside and firing into the bottom corner immediately after the interval.

Everton target Wilfried Gnonto performs well for Leeds United

Gnonto and two other Leeds stars had all hit the woodwork within minutes of each other in a bizarre start to the clash against Pompey.

The Italy international made up for his missed opportunity early in the second half to level the game at 2-2.

Despite being substituted by Farke, the 20-year-old had a positive performance which may see Everton reignite their interest before transfer deadline day.

It can be said that Sean Dyche could do with an additional wide option ahead of his side's opening clash against Brighton.

The likes of Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom have already come in but one more signing in that position would still be useful.

Gnonto would certainly provide a point of difference to the Toffees with his direct nature and ability to take on his man and get a shot away.

A deal may prove to be expensive but at 20 years old, the winger could prove to be one for the future.
