Everton: Premier League blasted over ‘terrible’ development as fresh talks emerge

The Premier League could be set to remove points deductions and introduce a “luxury tax” which could affect Everton, according to The Daily Mail.

Mike Keegan reported on the newspaper’s website that points deductions could become a thing of the past with potential new rules.

This season the Toffees, along with Nottingham Forest, have suffered a points deduction which has had a negative impact on their season.

On the new consideration, Keegan said: “A ‘luxury tax’ has been considered, where those clubs who overspend will have a financial punishment which would increase the more they splash the cash. But clubs can choose to press on regardless if they wish.

“The monies collected, which could run into the tens of millions, would then be redistributed to those Premier League who complied with the rules. It has been discussed that some of the fines could even go into an ’emergency fund’ to assist EFL clubs in financial danger.”

This would allow clubs to be as competitive as they wanted to be financially without the prospect of a point-based punishment.

Although this could benefit some teams, it could certainly negatively affect others which has sparked conversation from Miguel Delaney on X.

On that, he said: “These are terrible ideas A ‘luxury tax’ just serves the most wealthy as they can keep paying whatever they want! Also the concern about wages – the PL pays £2bn more than the next highest-paying league as it is! How short-sighted are these people?”

Could a ‘Luxury Tax’ rule benefit Everton?

Given that Sean Dyche’s side have already faced a points deduction in the current campaign, this wouldn’t help them in the present.

If anything this potential new ruling is set to come in to protect other clubs against what has happened to Everton this year.

With the new stadium build, the finances available for transfers aren’t there. The ability for any other club to overtake The Toffees with the new rule would be there.

This ‘luxury tax’ could also spell the end for midtable clubs pushing towards Europe as the “big six” will be able to spend 100s of millions. On top of this, wealthy sides such as Aston Villa and Newcastle United could move away from the midfield.

Everton have already faced the punishment via a points deduction for their financial mismanagement and a change in ruling wouldn’t have a positive impact on them.

It is clear that Delaney, nor the Everton fans are happy with this potential new rule.
