Adam Aznou: Everton transfer strategy must come into question after season-long snub

Adam Aznou’s move to Everton has stalled his career.

That is the reality of the situation that the former Bayern Munich defender has found himself in following the last game of the season.

The fullback arrived with plenty of hype. A young and talented defender arriving from the Bundesliga champions – what was not to love?

However, for the player, it has so far turned out to be the wrong career move, and for Everton, the wrong transfer.

Now, ahead of Everton’s summer business, Aznou must be one of the first stars to question whether he should be sticking around at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Why Adam Aznou’s career has stalled at Everton

Every young player in football needs just one thing to develop properly, and that is minutes on the pitch. It is vital to progressing and improving your qualities.

However, Aznou has barely been given any opportunity to do so across this season and has now ended the season with zero appearances in the Premier League.

The 19-year-old has made just one appearance in all competitions, coming on a substitute against Sunderland in the FA Cup.

In that game, Aznou even had a definitive impact, winning the penalty that the Toffees would equalise late from to send the game into extra time.

He was also strong in his battles, winning his only attempted tackle and winning five out of his eight duels.

Despite that game-changing moment and solid cameo, it did little to change the tune of David Moyes, who has selected him on the bench for 22 Premier League matches.

In January, Moyes later mooted a loan move for the Moroccan, but in the end, nothing came to fruition, with the manager confirming he was unsure of whether he would even play the young talent.

The Scotsman said: “I’m not sure that he would get the opportunities in the position we bought him to play.”

It is an unfortunate situation for the player, whose career has undoubtedly stalled as an impact from the transfer.

Everton’s intentions with the move look more and more bizarre, considering Moyes is not even willing to give him a chance.

How Adam Aznou’s situation could affect future Everton transfers

The saga around Aznou could end up putting other young players off joining Everton.

If they see a young talent such as the Moroccan not even be handed an opportunity, they may think it is not a good career move for them.

Pathways in football are ever so important for the younger crop of talent, and if there is no way into a first team, opportunities elsewhere will be sought instead.

Aznou still has three years left on his contract, so perhaps a loan away from the Toffees this summer is on the cards, with a view to integrating him the following season.

For Everton, this situation is certainly a lesson. If a player is going to be purchased, they should be brought in with a plan already in place for their development.

When it comes to Aznou, it seems they did not do such a thing, and questions must be asked of the transfer strategy that identified the defender as a target.

However, not all hope is lost for Aznou based on Coleman’s career.
