Alan Shearer blown away by MOTD footage of Everton stars after win vs Crystal Palace
Alan Shearer was impressed by what he saw from Everton's inexperienced squad in their win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Thierno Barry were both on target at Hill Dickinson Stadium to secure all three points despite a large sense of negativity throughout the summer transfer window.
Everton still have a lot of work to do in the transfer market, but some of David Moyes' decisions so far may have been justified by how his side performed against Palace.
Harrison Armstrong's performance was part of that, with Shearer loving his performance in the centre of the field on Merseyside.
The 19-year-old made only his seventh Premier League start in the game.
But Shearer believes that lack of experience may have helped the teenage midfielder
How fearless Harrison Armstrong impressed Alan Shearer
Armstrong was all over the pitch on Saturday.
Not only did he assist Dewsbury-Hall's goal, he also completed 89 per cent of his passes and made five defensive contributions.
Shearer waxed lyrical on BBC One's Match of the Day on Saturday night, and also highlighted how impressed he was by Dewsbury-Hall's goal.
"They suffered a bit in the first half but because of their lack of Premier League experience, there was no panic from them. I think that's what was the impressive thing," said Shearer.
"Armstrong more than plays his part in the first goal here, he wins that ball and this is a piece of magic from Dewsbury-Hall with the way he gets his shot away. A little backlift and the power and the direction."
"That's the part I love [about Armstrong's performance]. Getting back, winning the ball back, timing of tackles, putting pressure on the ball, leading from the front and doing what you have to do."
Is Armstrong going to be a regular starter for Everton this season?
He's 19, he's English and he's an Everton academy product, so it's definitely in the club's best interests to play Armstrong as much as possible this season.
And if he continues to play as he did against Palace, it's a win-win for everyone involved.
Armstrong has now played 22 times for Everton's first team and done well on loan spells away at Preston and Derby.
The versatile central midfielder absolutely can find himself as one of the first names on Moyes' team sheet this season, especially as Everton are unlikely to be adding more central midfielders between now and the end of the transfer window.
Despite Merlin Rohl's good performance at right-back, that area is still a huge concern for the Toffees.
And despite Barry's goal, another striker is definitely needed, too.
Armstrong definitely could be a key player over the new season.
