English media reacts to Everton star James Garner's cameo in Spain loss
Everton star James Garner split opinion as England lost 3-2 to Spain.
The Blues midfielder was a late replacement after five players withdrew from the Three Lions squad.
Despite the fact that he was not initially selected for the squad, Garner came on in the 70th minute against the World Cup winners.
He could not inspire his country to a positive result in the UEFA Nations League A group contest at Wembley.
The British media have had their say on Garner's display despite it being such a short cameo.
There was little sympathy for the Hill Dickinson Stadium star despite the fact that he was thrown into the deep end late in the clash.
How did the media rate Everton's James Garner in loss vs Spain?
Garner was not given much time to make an impact in his third cap for his country.
The Standard handed him a five out of 10 rating, saying: “Found himself in an unfamiliar position late on and his cross was poor.”
talkSPORT's Adrian Durham was harsher, with a four rating, saying: “I’m a big fan, but he didn’t bring too much; great run but terrible cross on 85 minutes.”
The Express decided to not give him a rating, saying: “Handed his first competitive minutes in the middle but didn’t really get into the game.”
Meanwhile, Sportbible handed him a six, saying: “A decent cameo from the Everton man and could have grabbed an assist if his cross for Dominic Calvert-Lewin wasn’t overhit.”
The mixed nature of the reviews with do little to solve Tuchel's issue of whether Garner deserves a place in his side after the latest scenes.
Why Garner is in a difficult spot with England
Garner was not originally included, which suggests that Tuchel feels like he is low in his pecking order, behind the likes of Declan Rice and Kobbie Mainoo.
Although, that idea is countered by the fact that Garner was his first substitution from the bench, as he looked to freshen up his side .
Tuchel is clearly conflicted about the Toffees star, so the 25-year-old needs to force him to appreciate him.
If he gets an opportunity against Czechia next time out, Croatia or when the Three Lions face the Czechs again, he must take it with both hands.
Otherwise, he may well be stuck in limbo while the former Chelsea boss is in charge, wondering when every squad comes around whether he will have a place or be left out.
Garner is in a very difficult position right now, and he could make it a lot more straightforward if he plays well in the current break when he is on the pitch.
