Everton first-half ratings vs Preston: Thierno Barry stars, more to come from Tyler Dibling
David Moyes returned to Deepdale on Wednesday as the opposition manager, looking to take his Blues side into the third round.
The Toffees boss named a strong starting line-up, with three changes from the win over Crystal Palace last time out.
Tyler Dibling, Michael Keane and James Garner came into the side, replacing Tyrique George, Jarrad Branthwaite and Hayden Hackney.
Harvey Foster, who impressed in pre-season was named in the senior squad for a competitive match for the first time.
The visitors started with intent and eventually took the lead through Thierno Barry.
Thierno Barry excels again in Preston vs Everton
Barry continued his fine form from the opening Premier League game, when he scored the second goal.
He was picked ahead of Beto for the clash with the Championship side, and he made the required impact after 25 minutes.
Barry was sent away for a brilliant counter-attacking chance by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall but he could not finish it, but he made up for that later on.
He was in a great position to finish from Vitalii Mykolenko's cross to open the scoring.
It looks like he is set to capitalise on the chances that he has been given to forge a genuine role as the leading number nine.
Tyler Dibling has a miserable first-half on rare Everton start
Dibling was given a rare starting opportunity, but he failed to take it in the first-half
He played just 513 minutes last season in his first season at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The hope was that he could show Moyes that he can be a potential starter, but that did not happen in the opening 45 minutes.
He had four efforts, only two of which managed to trouble the goalkeeper and did not create any chances for his teammates.
He needs to come up with the goods in the second period, or he may find himself hooked before he can show what he can do.
It is a real shame that it has just not happened for the 20-year-old in a Blues shirt yet, but it was more of the same at Deepdale.
