Everton player ratings vs Preston: Thierno Barry takes all the credit as teammate goes under the radar

Everton secured passage to the Carabao Cup third round with a 4-0 win over Preston on Wednesday.

David Moyes named a strong team at Deepdale, with just three changes from the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Thierno Barry gave the Blues the lead in the first-half, finishing from Vitalii Mykolenko's cross.

The Frenchman then doubled the lead in the second 45 minutes, as he prodded home after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's shot was saved.

He then notched with 20 minutes left to seal his first ever hat-trick for the Merseysiders, before Brennan Johnson got the fourth.

The result means that the Toffees still have a chance to pick up their first trophy since 1995 this season.

Thierno Barry is the obvious Man of the Match

Barry notched all three strikes in a momentous display against the second tier side.

The first two goals were a product of being in the right place at the right time, as he couldn't miss the first then the second he was there to covert after a save.

The third was the pick of the bunch though, as Jordan Pickford sent Dewsbury-Hall away, he passed to Johnson, who teed up the Frenchman.

Once again, Barry showed confidence, dispatching the ball into the back of the net.

He even picked up an assist, when he slipped in Johnson for the last goal of the game.

Hopefully, he can now make the number nine shirt his own and cement himself as the starter, and leave Beto in the dust.

James Garner also deserves credit after Everton win

While Barry is rightfully getting all the credit, James Garner's display is going under the radar.

The Englishman was tremendous, before he was replaced in the 64th minute by Johnson.

Garner completed 95 per cent of his passes, and created four chances for his teammates, according to Fotmob data.

The two-cap international made nine passes into the final third and was successful with both long balls that he attempted, for a 100 per cent success rate

Defensively, he made five tackles, one interception and six recoveries in a brilliant display.

Garner won six of seven duels on the ground, for an 86 per cent success rate, showing his dominance

Moyes will be delighted that he is back from his injury issue, as will the rest of the Blues' squad.
