Everton may have had a fortunate start to the Premier League season.

The Toffees were unbeaten after six league games, but lost that record after Chelsea beat them 2-0 in Merseyside.

David Moyes' team have 10 points after seven games and sit eighth in the table.

At the moment, relegation threats seem a far cry at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The next few weeks could be pivotal for the Blues as they face Arsenal and Newcastle United twice.

Warnings are already being issued to fans in Merseyside and things could go downhill pretty quickly for the team.

Why Pat Nevin was amazed at Everton question

Chelsea got the better of Everton after Pedro Neto scored two goals in the second half.

Moyes has come under a bit of scrutiny from a section of the fanbase for his team selection at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Before the game, given the Toffees' defensive strength, it wouldn't have been far-fetched to think they could get something out of it.

However, Moyes' lack of squad depth may finally be affecting the Merseyside outfit.

Pat Nevin was at the game and believes fans in L3 should dampen their ambitions for the rest of the season.

Writing in BBC Sport on 20 October, the former Toffees attacker said, "Beforehand, an understandably biased Toffees fan asked me if I thought they could win and even manage a top-six finish this season.

"I picked my jaw up from the floor and answered: 'It has been a good start, but avoiding relegation should still be the real focus.'

"Evertonians should beware: due to underinvestment, dark clouds are gathering."

Why future looks bleak for David Moyes at Hill Dickinson Stadium

At the end of last season, Everton proved they can't be relied on for consistency.

In the 2025-26 campaign, the Toffees didn't win any of their last seven matches, finishing 13th in the table.

At one stage it looked like the Blues would be competing for a European finish, but that wasn't to be.

While the Merseysiders have had a decent start to the season, the upcoming fixture congestion could take a toll on the squad.

Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Sunderland sit near the bottom of the table, and many expect them to find form soon.

Consistency will be key for Moyes to avoid getting dragged into a relegation battle.
