Jamie Redknapp wowed by 'excellent' Vitalii Mykolenko moment in Everton draw vs Tottenham

Jamie Redknapp was impressed by Vitalii Mykolenko's determination in Everton's 0-0 draw at Tottenham on Saturday evening.

David Moyes' men stretched their unbeaten start to the Premier League season to four games, while Spurs' wait for a first win - and a first goal - goes on.

Although Tottenham had the majority of the possession, it was Everton who managed to test the goalkeeper more often.

However, while their efforts weren't enough to breach the London club's defence at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Blues will return to Merseyside with a point they'll definitely be happy with.

Mykolenko's duel with Savio was one of the key match-ups throughout the game in North London.

And it was Mykolenko who ultimately came out on top.

At half time, as Redknapp piled praise on Spurs attacker Savio, he analysed a clip in which the ex-Manchester City winger tore down the right and caused issues for Everton defence.

Although Savio caught Mykolenko out initially, the Ukraine international recovered by sprinting back to block a cross.

Despite sliding off the pitch, Mykolenko then got up again to stop a second cross into the box from Savio.

"[Savio's] looked extremely sharp. He's been the bright one on the pitch, he's always looked to be proactive," Redknapp said on Sky Sports at half time.

"You can see Mykolenko gets too tight and he drifts past him, [gets] past Garner and tries to get the cross in.

"Mykolenko does really well to get back - great determination.

"And again here, he needs a bit more quality here but Mykolenko, again, is excellent."

Ashley Young also has his say

Following up on Redknapp's analysis, ex-Everton star Ashley Young looked at Savio's first-half heatmap and said: "He's wanted to get at Mykolenko.

"I thought that Mykolenko eventually dealt with him."

Despite Mykolenko's handling of Savio, the 27-year-old was still being criticised on social media by some Everton fans, who just cannot drop their disdain towards him.

Mykolenko has been at the club for over four years but seems to be someone who attracts a lot of criticism; often unfairly.

One X account said 11 minutes into the game: "I’d sub Mykolenko right now not even messing."

Around the same time, another Evertonian said: "Mykolenko giving me nightmares already."

Despite Redknapp's glowing review at the break, this Everton fan said: "Worst player on the pitch. Getting ripped apart."

Clearly, Mykolenko needs to score a hat-trick on top of keeping Savio quiet and the ball out of the back of the Everton net in order to win over supporters like this.
