He held onto the ball for more than eight seconds, meaning the referee awarded Lille a corner kick.

Jarrad Branthwaite headed the set-piece clear so no damage was done, but that is something Pickford will have to be wary of.

Everton fans applaud Olivier Giroud

There were a few well-known names in the Lille squad, not least striker Olivier Giroud.

The former Arsenal star did not last long, though, as he hobbled off injured during the first half.

Giroud, who was once reportedly close to joining Everton, skippered his side at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

A number of Everton fans applauded Giroud as he made his way off the field, perhaps sympathising with the ageing striker's woes.

Tyler Dibling had some bright moments for Everton without making that tell.

However, he would have got his name on the scoresheet if not for a superb save from Berke Ozer.

Dibling's curling shot was heading for the net if not for the intervention of Ozer in the Lille goal.

As pointed out by the Liverpool Echo's Joe Thomas via X, Dibling was left in "disbelief" at that moment of magic.

Everton's inability to add a second proved costly, although drawing this pre-season friendly matters little in the grand scheme of things.
