Jordan Pickford was at the centre of attention as England fell behind in their 2-1 against DR Congo on Wednesday.

Battling for a spot in the round of 16 at the World Cup, the sides locked horns in Atlanta, with Pickford dropping an early howler as the African side took an early lead.

A piece of poor defending from Ezri Konsa allowed a ball to be sent out to Brian Cipenga, who gave DR Congo the lead in the seventh minute.

Pickford was caught out for the goal, with the Everton shotstopper beaten at his near post.

Thomas Tuchel's side would bounce back to win 2-1, though the match was far from comfortable.

Reacting to the opening period, 2014 World Cup winner and Bayern Munich icon Bastian Schweinsteiger picked out Pickford's moment in his analysis.

How Pickford's error has gone down on the continent

With Germany knocked out by Paraguay on Monday, England are now the team to watch with Tuchel at the helm.

But, it looked like the Three Lions could be joining their neighbours on Wednesday, as they fell behind in the early stages.

Reacting during the first hydration break, Schweinsteiger suggested that it could be a difficult day for England.

"Lots of defensive errors, poor goalkeeping, wrong decisions," said the former midfielder, speaking on ARD Das Erste during their television coverage in Germany.

"The spectators are already getting restless. This will be a tough nut to crack for England," he added.

The Three Lions would recover and secure their progression, but the match was made much more difficult for themselves with the early goal for the Congolese.

Heading into Sunday's clash against Mexico, the ever-reliable Pickford will have to pick his head back up for a clash as the Azteca, which is set to be like a cauldron.

England will still be reliant on Jordan Pickford as legacy remains unchanged

Since making his World Cup debut in 2018, the Toffees man has been unbelievably reliable at international level.

A wobbly tournament so far does not change his legacy, nor does it alter what he can do when called upon.

Pickford has starred in multiple penalty shootouts, and he has made hugely important saves.

As the stakes rise, he will undoubtedly rise with them, especially if he is called upon to face a shootout.

He may have endured a difficult run, but his history suggests that it won't be too long before he is back in form for club and country.
