Why Henry Winter was relieved by Everton vs Chelsea scenes after James Garner incident
Henry Winter has had his say on the main controversy as Everton lost to Chelsea on Saturday.
The Toffees fell to a 2-0 defeat as a Pedro Neto made all the difference at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
There were no complaints about either goal as Jordan Pickford arguably could have done better with at least the first.
It was various refereeing calls from Paul Tierney that did cause plenty of frustration on Merseyside.
Harrison Armstrong was booked for a seemingly fair challenge, but that isn't even the main talking point.
That came as James Garner and Morgan Rogers clashed, with Winter now assessing that situation.
What has Henry Winter said about James Garner vs Morgan Rogers?
There was certainly plenty of needle in the opening 45 minutes in L3.
Both sides showed a physical side to their performance and it was down to the match officials to deal with that.
Potentially the biggest call came as Garner and Rogers flew in to a 50:50 challenge.
Both could be deemed to be in the wrong, although with the Chelsea man already on a yellow card, it felt like a stroke of luck that he wasn't sent off.
The wider footballing world agreed with the call to book neither player, while their actions have certainly gone down well with Winter.
Taking to X on Sunday, the journalist wrote: "Morgan Rogers and James Garner had an old-school 50-50, flying in, targeting the ball. Rogers arguably more culpable with foot slightly raised but no card for either was the right verdict.
"Bit naive of Rogers going in so hard on a booking. But then Garner was going in hard but fair, too. Old-school moment between two players who know each other, who played for England together earlier this month.
He went on to add why the Everton man would have been doubly annoyed by the situation at hand.
"Some players other than Garner and Rogers might have milked that challenge. Frustrating for Garner to have to go off for 60 seconds as he’d received medical attention."
It is certainly a moment that has divided opinion, with David Moyes throwing his own thoughts into the mix.
What did David Moyes say after Everton vs Chelsea controversy?
Winter isn't one for suggesting that the Chelsea star should have been given his marching orders.
With both players going wholeheartedly into a challenge, it may be seen as fair that neither faced punishment.
That isn't the opinion of Moyes as he believes that Rogers could have been sent off for his part in the scenes.
Speaking in his post-match interview, he said: "I’ve had a wee look at the Morgan Rogers tackle on Jimmy, which some may have said something different. And I think that might have made it a second yellow. But that wasn’t the case."
It would be interesting to see how the Scot would feel hours later away from the heat of the moment.
The general feeling is that Tierney made the correct call, although it certainly didn't benefit Everton on the day.
