David Moyes has a clear priority in improving Everton's midfield.

The Toffees started the window strong by signing Middlesbrough's Hayden Hackney in a package deal worth up to £24million.

The Championship Player of the Season comes to Hill Dickinson with a highly respected background and much potential to thrive with the Blues.

Hackney has looked set to partner James Garner in the middle of the park for the Toffees next season, but that may not be the case after all.

Moyes surely knew what the priority was heading into the summer window, with both the right-back and striker positions big talking points.

However, Everton seem to be pushing on for more midfield recruits, which may leave some questioning Moyes.

David Moyes questions asked after Pape Gueye agreement

Goodison News understands that Everton have reached an agreement to sign Pape Gueye from Villarreal in a deal worth £28m.

Though the midfielder had an impressive season for the La Liga side, as well as an enjoyable World Cup campaign, the move raises questions around Moyes' and Everton's transfer thoughts.

Gueye could become Everton's fourth signing of the summer, and third midfield addition after Merlin Rohl and Hackney, with the Toffees also reportedly monitoring former Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz.

The Brazilian is said to be appreciated at Hill Dickinson, while Everton remain keen on signing Christ Inao Oulai, a midfield talent for Trabzonspor.

It raises questions as to what the midfield plans are, especially with Hackney now in the fold. Surely the Blues haven't spent the money they have on the former Boro man just for him to sit on the bench?

It wouldn't be the first time that Everton have moved backwards in a transfer window.

Idrissa Gueye has already shared what's 'exceptional' about Everton target Pape Gueye

Are two key positions being neglected by Everton?

The overwhelmingly key area to improve heading into the window was clearly right-back, after Evertonians endured Jake O'Brien, a centre-back, playing out of position for the whole of last season.

Everton aren't neglecting the position per se, as they have a long list of targets, but the longer the wait goes on, the more concerns will grow,

The Friedkins clearly aren't gun-shy to pull the trigger and spend money, as seen with the business done already, so what is the hold-up?

As for the striker position, Moyes surely knows that his side needs someone who can hit double figures easily, if the Toffees are going to be serious next season.

Let's hope Moyes and Everton have their priorities straight after the recent transfer activity for midfielders.
