Everton can now step up their efforts to sign John Stones on a free transfer.

The centre-back is currently available on a free transfer after departing Manchester City at the end of his contract.

He saw out the season with the Citizens and is now on the lookout for a new challenge.

That won't come until after the World Cup as he continues to be an England regular despite being without a club.

The 32-year-old is now looking ahead to a semi-final clash with Argentina on Wednesday before a potential final on Sunday.

All that will eventually make way for a transfer decision as Stones could still agree an Everton return this summer.

John Stones evaluating next move after contract offer

There has already been many incomings at Hill Dickinson Stadium this summer.

Merlin Rohl and Tyrique George have seen their loan moves made permanent while Hayden Hackney has come in from Middlesbrough.

David Moyes won't be done there as he looks to refresh his squad after a disappointing end to last season.

Bringing in someone with the experience of Stones could prove to be wise as he continues to prove his worth with England.

They could have an ideal opportunity to bring him in now after he turned down an approach from Napoli.

Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla reported on Saturday that he "politely refused" a move to Naples, potentially because they didn't reach his £6.8million salary demand.

The Englishman is said to be evaluating many potential moves this summer as he remains on the hunt for a new club.

Everton could now have an ideal chance to make a move happen in a deal that would be a real coup.

Stones mooted as priority transfer at Everton

There is no hiding from how great a signing the defender could prove to be on Merseyside.

He has so much quality, class and experience that could make a world of difference at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Stones could work in a similar way to Jack Grealish and the impact he had after joining the Toffees last summer.

Former Everton scout Bryan King previously suggested that it will be a "priority to secure him [Grealish] and bring Stones with him."

He went on to describe the potential deal as a "major coup" and it certainly would be that.

Considering Stones has already turned down a move abroad, they could now have the perfect chance to force a deal over the line.

It's time to come back to where he really made a name for himself.
