Everton are looking to get a head start in their 2026-27 preparations.

The Toffees limped home at the back end of last season, enduring a seven-match winless run.

The term would end with David Moyes' side in 13th, after they were in the European spots just seven matches prior.

As a result, the Blues are in desperate need of a reset this summer.

Hayden Hackney is the only player to arrive so far who was not here last season, but both Tyrique George and Merlin Rohl will continue as Everton players.

Ahead of what will hopefully be a more prosperous year, Goodison News takes a look at the differences between the transfer action of a year ago compared to now.

Everton's recent business compared with last summer

On 9 July 2025, the Toffees had confirmed the permanent signing of Carlos Alcaraz after the prior loan spell.

Alongside this, French forward Thierno Barry had also made his move from Villarreal, notching the total up to £39million.

Both would struggle last season, with Alcaraz suffering from injury problems, while Barry received his fair share of criticism for his inconsistency in front of goal - yielding eight league goals.

This time around, the tally has been beaten, with deals for Hackney, George and Rohl tallying up to £51.5m, plus any potential add ons.

Hackney was named Championship Player of the Season in May, after a remarkable season with Middlesbrough, and will now look to take the step up to the top flight on Merseyside.

George and Rohl performed in spells last season, though they did not exactly have many chances under Moyes.

Deals getting over the line - especially for George - do indicate that the Scotsman is willing to place more faith in the pair next season, though.

Is Everton's recruitment more deliberate after European mishap?

After the disappointing end to the season, Everton were always going to have to heavily strengthen this summer.

Crucially, though, the recruitment was going to have to be more deliberate - something it certainly seems to be.

Moyes drew constant criticism from the fans for his continued stubbornness last season, and unwillingness to make use of younger talent.

The faith placed in the three arrivals so far indicates that this could change, and oh is it needed, after Everton limped home last term with a squad still largely used to fighting for survival on Merseyside.

Refreshing the squad, Everton look to be building a side capable of developing, rather than just capable of competing in the here and now.
