What David Ornstein is already predicting for Everton ahead of January transfer window

Everton endured a disappointing summer transfer window on the whole, but January presents an opportunity to put things right.

The Toffees made headlines on deadline day a week ago when missing out on a £40million deal for Folarin Balogun.

That, combined with Beto being granted permission to join Fiorentina, leaves David Moyes with just Thierno Barry to choose among his strikers.

In a summer of record spending among Premier League clubs, Everton splashed out just £78.2million.

The Toffees were one of just six teams in the division not to make a loss, meanwhile, with Iliman Ndiaye's exit to Manchester City raising £60m alone.

Moyes has been left short, but that could now change when the window reopens a few months from now.

Everton predicted to be busiest Premier League club in January

Everton may have signed a right-back in Ainsley Maitland-Niles, but even that went down to the final throes of the window.

The Toffees had more money to play with for a 'better' option in that department, further annoying supporters.

Speaking on The Athletic FC podcast on Tuesday, transfer expert David Ornstein was asked who he expects to be the busiest Premier League club in January.

"I'm going to say, based on a numbers game, Everton might be the busiest because they need reinforcements and a bit more depth," Ornstein said.

"David Moyes, in the final year of his contract, will want those reinforcements."

Whether or not Balogun remains on Everton's radar ahead of the window reopening is unknown, but it does seem unlikely.

How does Everton's transfer spending compare with others?

Jack Grealish's return to Everton on loan on deadline day went somewhat under the radar given the events elsewhere.

Everton's window was not disastrous, even if some will suggest it was, but nor was it great.

Only Sunderland, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace spent less than Everton among Premier League clubs.

With £78.2m spent and £102.4m raised through sales, it is clear why fans are so irate.

The only hope now is that the Friedkin Group reinvest that profit they made back into the squad at the earliest opportunity.
