Who is Richard Rios? Everton-linked Benfica midfielder with one obvious transfer problem
Everton are interested in Benfica midfielder Richard Rios as they continue their transfer surge.
The Toffees are looking to reset and go again after a disappointing end to the Premier League season.
After flying high in the European spots for most of the season, David Moyes' side limped home to a 13th-place finish.
As a result, there is serious pressure from the fans.
Over the summer, the Blues are looking to show more ambition, which has started with the signing of Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough.
And with this in mind, Goodison News takes a look at Rios, who is the latest to be mentioned as a summer target.
Everton the latest to spot unique Richard Rios traits
As per Salvatore Ferrante of CalcioBox Italy, Everton are among a handful of clubs interested in Rios, alongside Bournemouth and Fulham.
Joining Benfica a year ago, it is unusual for a South American player to move to Europe so late, given he is now 26, if there is something about them.
With Rios though, there absolutely is, with the Colombian's route to Europe being far from ordinary.
Coming through futsal before making a name for himself in Brazil, he would spend time at Flamengo, Mazatlan, Gurani and Palmeiras, before his eventual move to Lisbon.
Now at 26, he is said to have a release clause worth £87million in his contract that runs to 2030, though obviously those interested will think they can negotiate a lower fee.
Benfica are in no rush to sell, but the departure of Jose Mourinho could make a big difference.
As a player, he is physically strong, sharp in tight spaces, and excellent at eating up ground, making him a strong box-to-box presence.
He can play deeper, compete in duels and cover ground, but he is also comfortable receiving the ball under pressure and carrying it through midfield - any interest from Everton would be a real sign of ambition, though they may encounter one issue.
Everton could encounter glaring issue that they could have avoided
Alongside the sides mentioned, Napoli are also heavily interested in the midfielder.
Rios is keen on playing Champions League football next term, and may see the Italian giants as a big step in his career.
Everton will be kicking themselves after missing out on Europe last season. Not only would it have been fantastic for the fans, it would have laid the foundations for future players to join.
They may still fare well in the market with the Premier League pull, but the attraction of Europe would have been even better.
Benfica do hold the cards, but his value outside of his release clause does not sit as high as they want after spending the majority of the World Cup on the bench.
Everton would have been in a strong position to pounce with European football, but for now, they have to rely on some great negotiation tactics if they are to pursue the midfielder.
