Why Everton think they can beat Sunderland to Jack Grealish after 'shock' bid

Everton are still in the hunt to sign Jack Grealish this summer.

David Moyes has never shied away from his admiration of the Manchester City star, who spent last season on loan.

It was a brilliant start to life at Hill Dickinson Stadium for Grealish too, but injury cut short his season at the start of 2026.

Grealish looked destined to re-join Everton under no competition, but that has all blown up on Wednesday.

Sunderland have entered the race kicking and screaming, making a loan proposal for the England international out of nowhere.

Everton now have to react with only six days left in the window, but they seemingly are ready to do that.

What is Everton's position on Jack Grealish?

As known already, they want to re-sign him.

The I Paper has reaffirmed that news after Sunderland's "shock" bid, but they've gone one step further.

It's reported by the newspaper on their website that Everton still believe Grealish would prefer to re-join them instead.

Mark Douglas also shared the news on X, stating that the Toffees fancy their chances of winning the race, regardless of bids elsewhere, given his suggested preference above.

On top of that, City are ready to let Grealish go again, either on loan or even permanently from the Etihad.

That's even as he enters the final year of his contract there.

How much would Jack Grealish cost?

Having spent £12million all in on Grealish's loan last season, Everton want better terms this time around.

Given his rescinding contract and long-term injury, City should have no issues with that either.

The real issue is that Sunderland have Europa League football to offer Grealish, and they have no financial issues around what they could pay him, either.

But, Grealish has been there and done it, winning the Champions League, so an extra game every so often on a Thursday isn't going to sway him hugely.

Everton have other pressing concerns, but things happen in the final week of a transfer window, so may need to keep plates spinning.

They need a new right-back desperately, but also need to move now if they want to avoid Grealish ending to Sunderland.
