BBC journalist Giulia Bould claimed on Thursday that she understands that he will return on another loan and "loves Everton".
She stated that he will not be available for the start of the new campaign due to his recovery from surgery.
David Moyes' side can sort a late-summer deal so that the Toffees do not have to pay his wages while he is not playing, according to Bould.
Why Everton are looking for another loan move rather than a permanent transfer
The Blues could have probably reached a permanent agreement with the Citizens if they wanted to.
They had a £50million clause to buy the player after his loan expired, but were reportedly trying to negotiate a lower fee, given his age and his contractual situation.
If they couldn't do that, then a loan move makes perfect sense, as they can pick him up on a free transfer next summer.
Grealish's deal with Enzo Maresca's side expires in the summer of 2027, so he will be available for nothing if new terms are not agreed.
An agreement between the two parties is unlikely, as he is not in the manager's plans at the Etihad Stadium, just like he wasn't under Pep Guardiola.
Taking him on a temporary deal for another year then picking him up without a fee attached is the ideal solution for Moyes' side.
