Gary Lineker reacts to major Everton incident v Leicester as MOTD show footage

Gary Lineker has agreed that Leicester City got lucky to avoid giving away a penalty in their 4-0 defeat at Everton on Saturday.

The Toffees felt hard done by not being given a spot kick after Beto went down in the area under the challenge of Jannik Vestergaard.

The Denmark international barged into the 27-year-old as he ran through on goal but VAR opted not to alter the initial decision made by referee Darren Bond.

It is fair to say that Shay Given wasn’t in agreement with the officials on Match of the Day (1 February), as he said: “We saw a penalty earlier, remember Liverpool got.

“I think this was a little bit lucky that it wasn’t given, they might have got away with one.”

Former Foxes forward Lineker was in full agreement as he replied: “I would say so yes.”

There is only one-way supporters of any club can look at this decision. It is a clear penalty.

The Guinea-Bissau international had the ball inside the Foxes’ area and looked likely to get a shot off at Mads Hermansen’s goal.

The striker wasn’t afforded this opportunity as Vestergaard smashed into the forward without getting any sort of touch on the ball.

It is bizarre that this was waved away so quickly by VAR despite it being quite “clear and obvious” that the Leicester man had fouled Beto.

The Toffees number 14 certainly had the last laugh as he bagged a brace in a 4-0 win over Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side who were very poor on the day.

This allowed David Moyes and Co. to secure an easy win at Goodison but on another day the penalty decision could have had more of a damming impact.

The L4 club won’t be bothered by this after a 4-0 win but will hope that these sorts of decisions are called in the right way moving forward.
