David Moyes highlights his own biggest Everton shortcoming with honest post-Chelsea admission
David Moyes was perhaps too honest for his own good with comments made after Everton's loss to Chelsea.
The Toffees were defeated 2-0 at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday afternoon through a couple of second-half goals from Pedro Neto.
Moyes made a couple of changes to the starting lineup on the back of the 2-2 draw with Hull City a week earlier.
Vitalii Mykolenko returned from injury, while Merlin Rohl was given the nod on the right wing instead of Tyrique George against his former club.
That is a decision that raised some eyebrows, with Everton lacking any real threat down that side.
Moyes explained his thinking behind that decision post-match - and the reason given will not go down well with Evertonians.
What did David Moyes say about Merlin Rohl selection vs Chelsea?
Rohl had an underwhelming afternoon against Chelsea, though so to did pretty much each of his teammates.
Everton could have done with someone in that area to get at Chelsea's defence, which had not kept a clean sheet in nine months in the league.
That is a pretty remarkable run that came to an end with the 2-0 win on Merseyside.
And Moyes admitted at his post-match presser that he selected Rohl to deal specifically with Pep Chavarria, who did not even start for Chelsea.
"We thought that with his attacking work, that was required," he told reporters.
"The person who we thought would be best to work against him would be Merlin Rohl in that position.
"Merlin has played wide right and right-back, so he’s done both roles for us.
"I thought he probably did better when he went to right-back because he put in a couple of really good crosses in the second half."
Even beyond Moyes' selection call instantly backfiring due to Chelsea not starting Chavarria, the Scotsman selecting his team based around the opposition is just silly.
This Chelsea side is very weak at the back and they were there to be got at. Selecting a more defensive player out wide was a terrible choice.
In many ways it sums up Moyes' biggest shortcoming in that he is too eager to accommodate for the opposition, rather than utilising his own side's strengths.
The other massive call Moyes got wrong vs Chelsea
It could be argued that starting Rohl against Chelsea was the second biggest call Moyes got wrong at the weekend.
Top of the list was bringing on Christian Norgaard, who was clearly nowhere near match ready, for his belated Toffees debut.
Norgaard was dreadful against Chelsea in his 15 minutes or so on the field and was not the right man to turn to as Everton chased a goal.
Instead of finding that equaliser, Everton conceded a second and that was that.
