Everton saw too many players underperform in Saturday's loss to Chelsea.

The Toffees were unable to match their best-ever unbeaten start to a Premier League campaign as they went down 2-0 at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Pedro Neto scored both goals for Chelsea - one in the first minute of the second half and the other in the final minute of regulation time.

Everton were second best against Chelsea in their first competitive loss in any competition since May.

David Moyes made a couple of changes to Everton's starting lineup and also introduced Christian Norgaard for his debut in the second half.

However, his belated first appearance in an Everton shirt did not go quite to plan.

Why was Christian Norgaard criticised on Everton debut?

Norgaard was considered a decent signing in the summer window as he arrived from Arsenal for a fee of around £7million.

The Denmark international only spent one season at Emirates Stadium after previously impressing over six years with Brentford.

Moyes will soon get the best out of Norgaard, but he was clearly not fully over the injury that has plagued his Everton career to date against Chelsea.

Norgaard gave the bally away, failed to keep up with Chelsea players and earned a yellow card for a silly pullback on an opponent.

Reacting to that on talkSPORT's live coverage of the match, Matterface asked: "Norgaard, what on earth is he doing? He's had an eventful introduction."

Matterface went on to say it was "frightening" how badly the 32-year-old was off the pace.

Stuart Pearce alongside him certainly did not hold back, either, as he chimed in: "I'm not being funny, Sam.

"From what we've seen in these five minutes, you'd have to take him off. Honestly, the Chelsea players are running off him."

Moyes was urged to take Norgaard off less than 10 minutes into his debut, which is of course far from ideal, but it is also understandable.

Why David Moyes made error of judgement with Norgaard

Norgaard was an unused substitute in last week's draw at Hull City and has not played competitively in six months.

Speaking on Friday, Moyes said the Dane would again be part of the squad but is not near full fitness.

Introducing him late on against Chelsea, at a point the game was in the balance, was hardly a wise choice on that basis.

Moyes also took off Jack Grealish when he was looking to make things happen, so all in all it was not a great afternoon for the Scotsman.

Still, with this Everton's first loss of the campaign in all competitions, he has some credit in the bank.
