With the World Cup winding towards a conclusion, clubs are likely to ramp up their transfer business and Everton certainly have work to do.

So far, the Toffees have moved to sign Hayden Hackney on a full transfer from Championship outfit Middlesbrough.

Tyrique George and Merlin Rohl have also been added to the squad on a permanent basis after loan spells last season.

There is still a lot of work that needs to be done before the transfer comes to an end, though.

Improvement is being sought at full-back, midfield, and in forward areas in the coming weeks.

Here, Goodison News has ranked each position from strongst to weakest at Everton as things stand currently in the transfer window.

Goalkeepers - 8/10

You won't find many of an Everton persuasion who would like an upgrade on Jordan Pickford.

The 32-year-old may have had a few shaky moments for England at the World Cup, but he is still an absolute top-drawer performer.

Pickford has been a reliable performer for the Toffees for almost a decade and there is still plenty left in the tank.

Mark Travers provides decent back-up cover, though there are suggestions he could move on and Sam Johnstone is being tracked if he does.

Tom King is also on the books at Hill Dickinson Stadium, though he is a clear third choice and emergency back-up option.

Midfielders - 7/10

Midfield is an area that is looking reasonably well stocked, but still might have some tweaks to be made.

James Garner had a superb campaign last time out, which earned him England recognition.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall had a very solid first campaign, too, while Hackney was much sought after following his impressive performances in the Championship.

However, with veteran Idrissa Gana Gueye yet to decide whether to stick around, and Tim Iroegbunam potentially available for transfer, David Moyes might fancy some more defensive-minded options.

Both Pape Gueye and Mandela Keita have been linked with a move to Everton, and there may well be some movement on that front in the coming weeks.

Defenders - 6/10

Everton's defence is a little bit of a mixed bag.

At centre-back, the situation is pretty set. Jarrad Branthwaite - when fully fit - is an absolute shoo-in, and 33-year-old James Tarkowski is still a reliable performer.

Michael Keane enjoyed a decent campaign last time out, though he endured some difficulties under previous regimes.

The real issue, though, is definitely at right-back. Jake O'Brien much prefers to be in the centre of defence, but has played at full-back a lot in an Everton shirt.

Nathan Patterson will surely be allowed to leave if a good buyer is found, having endured difficulties with injury and form.

Everton are definitely tracking a new right-back, with Djed Spence and Aaron Wan-Bissaka apparently on their shortlist.

Some left-back cover for Vitaliy Mykolenko wouldn't go amiss either, especiall as Moyes doesn't seem to have much faith in Adam Aznou.

Forwards - 4/10

On the surface, this might seem quite a harsh ranking, but Everton could really do with more quality in the final third.

An upgrade would definitely be welcome on strikers Beto and Thierno Barry, and Bayer Leverkusen's teenage forward Christian Kofane is being tracked.

On the flanks, Jack Grealish has returned to Manchester City and it is unclear if there is a possibility for him to return, while Iliman Ndiaye is being tracked by other Premier League clubs.

George showed bags of potential last term, and there is excitement over his development at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

But Dwight McNeil has struggled to consistently prove himself in an Everton shirt and could be moved on.

And the £42million signing of Tyler Dibling has yet to prove fruitful, and he needs to show some marked improvement this time around.
