Kevin Boma was linked with Everton over the winter transfer window, but things went quiet very quickly.

Despite the Toffees being stacked in defence, David Moyes was looking at new central defenders to strengthen his ranks.

It baffled many at the time, with Everton suffering from several injuries in other areas of the pitch.

Iliman Ndiaye had a problem, while Jack Grealish missed the entire second half of the season without being replaced.

Now, that strategy has changed again.

Everton are now looking at their midfield and further forward, it seems, and any deal for Boma has been hit.

Estoril may have held firm in January, but only days after the summer window opened, that's changed.

Foot Mercato has reported that Boma will seal his next move to RB Salzburg soon, joining the Austrian giants.

It is said that it will cost only around £6million, with competition blown out of the water.

While others returned, Everton weren't mentioned after their last-gasp attempt back in the winter window was emphatically shut down.

Who else could Everton sign?

Right now, eyes are firmly in midfield and the final third.

That makes plenty of sense too, with full-backs needed much more than another central addition at the back.

Hayden Hackney of Middlesbrough is the first target to have progressed, with a bid already rejected from the Toffees.

Interestingly, Alan Nixon reported on Sunday that Moyes is pushing for the signing of Jarrod Bowen, although the suggested £20m offer won't go very far.

West Ham may have been relegated to the Championship, but they won't be ripped off for their captain because of it.

Everton simply can't afford to be cheap and miss out on more targets this summer, or they risk a repeat of throwing away European football yet again.

It was in the palm of their hands last season, and maybe Boma would have helped that if signed, but now it's too late.

A move to Austria does possibly deal a reality check that he isn't quite at Premier League standard yet anyway.

As for Everton and the Friedkins, it's time to get serious.
