Richard Rios and the clear Everton midfield rebuild being led by David Moyes
Richard Rios is a summer transfer target for Everton in what surely hints towards a restructuring of midfield for David Moyes.
Everton are said to be eyeing Rios, but they are not alone in doing so as Bournemouth and Fulham are also interested in the Benfica ace.
There is plenty of work to be done if a deal is to be struck as, beyond that interest from elsewhere, the 26-year-old would prefer to play Champions League football.
However, the links alone are pretty telling as to which direction Moyes wants to go this summer.
Hayden Hackney has officially joined Everton from Middlesbrough and he will instantly enhance the Toffees in the middle of the park.
Rios is a different type of player; one who could also bring some much-needed qualities to Hill Dickinson Stadium this summer.
What would Everton be getting in Richard Rios?
A look at Rios' heatmap from last season, where he thrived in the Portuguese top flight, shows he likes to play slightly right in advanced midfield.
The 35-cap Colombia international is a ball-carrier who is versatile and athletic.
He would bring added energy to Everton's midfield, as well as the ability to chip in with some goals.
On top of scoring five times in the Portuguese top flight last season, Rios also assisted four.
Gone are the days where Moyes will use a pure sitter. Far more energy is needed and that is a box Rios and Hackney both tick.
Where would Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall fit into the mix?
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was superb for Everton in his maiden campaign on Merseyside.
It goes without saying there needs to be a spot in Moyes' XI for the former Chelsea player.
Hypothetically speaking, Rios would sit alongside Hackney in holding midfield, with the pair complementing each other.
Dewsbury-Hall would be more advanced, with wingers either side and a striker.
Moyes would have the option of altering from a pure 4-2-3-1 to a what is effectively a 4-1-4-1, with Hackney deepest, depending on the opponent.
After falling short last season in a disappointing manner, it is clear that Moyes knows exactly where Everton need to be enhanced.
