David Moyes must be onto something new at Everton with the potential signing of Pape Gueye.

The Toffees have agreed a deal in principle with Villarreal to sign their midfielder, who has been at the World Cup this summer.

Gueye knows fellow Everton star Iliman Ndiaye as well as Idrissa Gana Gueye, with the trio all being teammates this summer for Senegal.

The nation was sent home early from the tournament after getting knocked out by Belgium in the Round of 32.

However, Gueye would be the Toffees' fourth signing of the summer if he did join, and also the third midfield player to come to Hill Dickinson already this summer.

That said, Moyes may have a new vision after last season's disappointment.

Goodison News understands that Everton have reached an agreement worth £24million for Gueye.

On top of this, there is also just over £4m worth of add-ons in the deal, with part of it being based on Champions League qualification.

The Blues have seemingly beaten the likes of Manchester United, Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Brighton, though they need to agree personal terms, too.

The Toffees increased inquiries in recent weeks for Gueye, who scored twice for Senegal at the World Cup.

Moyes could be planning to go to a flat-three midfield with the signing of the 27-year-old, especially considering that James Garner is a guaranteed starter, with Hayden Hackney also no slouch.

Then there's also Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who could be given a little more defensive duties next season, as Gueye's all-round ability can give more balance to the midfield and make up for chance creation too.

The Villarreal star's playstyle is more box-to-box related, and having three midfielders that can do the same role would be a nightmare for the opposition.

How tactical tweak for Gueye could suit Everton outcast's

Everton have plenty of midfielders that can play the modern-day "8" role, with the likes of Hackney and Garner two examples.

Some questioned the signing of Hackney due to the former Middlesbrough man's lack of strength and defensive work, with concerns rife due to his expected midfield partner, Garner.

That's where Gueye comes in, because he brings balance.

It may be that Hackney competes with Dewsbury-Hall for a starting spot, but the tactical tweak would leave Everton even more difficult for opponents to break down.

It also suits the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Merlin Rohl, who are both in that awkward category of players who aren't good enough to be a defensive midfielder, as well as an out-and-out attacking midfielder.

This change would allow Moyes to try multiple combinations in the middle of the park, and safely, as it all comes back to Gueye, who would be pivotal for it to happen.
