Wayne Rooney: Everton ‘must win’ v Burnley, demands players ‘fight for club’
Wayne Rooney says that Everton must win against Burnley on Wednesday for the fans and has demanded the players leave everything on the pitch.
The Toffees currently sit three points above the relegation zone after a sixth defeat in eight games to West Ham on Sunday.
They now travel to Turf Moor to face Burnley, who are below them in the league, in one of their games in hand and Rooney told Sky Sports Monday Night Football that the players must ‘fight for the club’.
“I think when you look and see the West Ham game, it was a better performance but I think once you’re in that run of form and you find things difficult,” he said.
“Like the second goal, Iwobi gives the ball away and then these things seem to always happen. They just need to hang in there and find a way to pick up results like they did against Newcastle.
“I think Newcastle were the better team on the night but Everton won that through fight. They won it through being horrible to play against, being hard to beat, and I think, I don’t want to question the Everton players’ will to fight because I don’t know what their characters are but I think that Newcastle game showed they can do it.
“They can fight. Especially at Goodison. They have to go and fight for the shirt, fight for the club and as I said, the Burnley game on Wednesday is huge because Everton have got tough fixtures.
“Yeah they can get results against them teams, but the Burnley one for confidence, for belief, for the fans, it’s a must-win game and they have to go in there and leave everything on that pitch.”

Must win
There is no disputing that Everton are in deep trouble right now, but a win at Burnley would not only clear some demons but also give them some breathing room.
The side have lost every single away game under Frank Lampard this season and have got the worst away record of all 92 league teams in England.
But that all goes out of the window for this game as they look to go against one of the three teams that have been worse than them this season to claim much needed points.
The fans will be in complete agreement with Rooney too. They need to see energy and effort from the team to be able to get behind them, otherwise it just feels like a chore watching the team.
A win would be absolutely huge for morale and for safety, but something needs to change. A draw isn’t the end of the world, but this game should be a must win to give them the best chance of safety.
