Everton ‘thinking of’ Fabio Cannavaro as new manager – report

Everton are ‘thinking of’ World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannavaro as their new manager, according to Italian outlet Il Mattino.

The Toffees sacked Rafa Benitez after just six-and-a-half months in charge on Sunday following defeat to Norwich, which meant just one win from their last 13 in the Premier League.

The club are keen to find a replacement before the weekend fixture against Aston Villa and Fabio Cannavaro is among the candidates to take over according to the latest report out of Italy.

Everton wanted to bring in Roberto Martinez but the Belgian FA aren’t willing to let him leave before the World Cup in November, so the deal is seen as ‘not easy’ to do.

Cannavaro is currently a free agent after a spell in China as manager of Guangzhou FC before leaving in 2021.

Left-field

There is no doubt that if the club were to bring Cannavaro in from the cold, it would be an appointment straight from the left-field.

The former World Cup winning captain is untested in European management, having previously only had spells in Qatar and China.

But his experience at the top level of the game is unquestionable after long spells at Juventus and Real Madrid during his playing days, evening winning the Ballon d’Or in 2006.

You’d expect him to bring a defensive solidity to the squad, something they didn’t have under Benitez and as a big name he could potentially attract some big names to the club during the transfer window too.

As an inexperienced coach in the major leagues though, it would certainly be a gamble on Everton’s part and realistically it isn’t one they can afford to get wrong.
